More About us hereunder
At Cafex, we operate two distinctive washing stations, each a hub of craftsmanship and dedication to producing exceptional coffee. Our stations, strategically located in Mutara, Province Kirundo and in Shikankoni, Province Kayanza, are meticulously managed to ensure the highest standards of coffee processing.
Running a washing station is a huge challenge. Burundian farmers work throughout the day to handpick their coffee cherries and at sunset, the coffee arrives at the CAFEX washing stations. The processing takes place at night, while the reception of the cherries takes place from sunrise until the early hours of the night, allowing farmers to focus on providing the highest quality coffee

CCafex was founded in 2006 in the heart of Burundi’s lush, verdant landscape. Built on a deep passion for coffee and rooted in two distinct cultures, the project set out to create a company that today stands as a benchmark for excellence in the export of green coffee.
From the beginning, the vision was clear: to combine the rich coffee heritage of ancestral lands with modern, sustainable practices, while improving the livelihoods of local communities.
Cafex works in close partnership with local farmers, ensuring fair compensation and ethical sourcing at every stage. By supporting smallholder producers and preserving privately owned fields, the company helps maintain both economic stability and agricultural independence within the region.
Environmental responsibility is central to Cafex’s approach. Through eco-friendly farming techniques and sustainable land management, Cafex actively reduces its environmental footprint while protecting the natural beauty of Burundi’s landscapes. This commitment directly contributes to the outstanding quality of its green coffee beans.
Cafex also plays a key role in empowering women. By creating opportunities for women to participate in coffee production, the company supports the development of essential skills such as agricultural management, financial literacy, and leadership. This commitment to gender inclusion strengthens both households and communities.
Sustainability remains at the core of Cafex’s operations. The company promotes practices such as shade-grown coffee, which preserves biodiversity while enhancing bean quality. In addition, Cafex supports reforestation initiatives, biodiversity conservation, and responsible water management.
Through this holistic approach, Cafex not only produces exceptional coffee but also contributes to the long-term resilience of the communities and ecosystems it serves.

Ripe cherries are selected from daily hand pickings from the farmers and then arrived at the washing station, they are floated to separate the highest quality cherries by density from the less quality cherries. If the natural method is used, the coffee is then dried. If the fully washed method is used, the coffee cherries are first pulped, wel fermented to 12-18 hours and then thoroughly washed in grading channels to remove all the remaining mucilage and further select the coffee by density. The coffee is then dried on raised beds in full sunlight for a total of aroud 20 days.
